EV charger installation cost

What a Level 2 home charger costs to install, whether your panel can take it, and what the permit and inspection involve in California.

These are market ranges, not a quote. Charger installs vary more than most jobs, and almost entirely on two things: the distance from your panel to where the car parks, and whether the panel has the capacity. Both are settled by a look rather than a phone call.

What installation costs

A straightforward Level 2 install runs eight hundred to two thousand dollars in labor and materials, not counting the charger itself. The variable is almost never the charger. It is the distance from the panel to where the car parks, and whether the panel has room.

Can your panel take it?

A Level 2 charger typically draws 32 or 48 amps continuously, and a continuous load has to be counted at 125 percent. That means a 48 amp charger needs a 60 amp breaker and 60 amps of genuine spare capacity.

Two things decide whether you have it. First, physical space: a full panel has nowhere to land the breaker. Second, the load calculation: adding up what the house already draws against what the service can carry. Plenty of 100 amp panels have an empty slot and still cannot support a charger.

If the numbers do not work, there are options short of a full upgrade. A load management device lets the charger back off when the house is drawing heavily. Dropping the charger to 32 amps adds a couple of hours to a full charge and often fits where 48 amps will not.

Level 1 or Level 2

Level 1 is the cord that came with the car plugged into an ordinary outlet. It adds three to five miles of range per hour, which is enough if you drive under forty miles a day and park overnight. It needs no installation.

Level 2 adds twenty to forty miles per hour and fills most batteries overnight. It needs a dedicated 240V circuit, which is the work described here. For most households with one EV, Level 2 is the right answer and Level 1 is the fallback.

Hardwired or plug-in

A plug-in charger uses a NEMA 14-50 outlet and can be unplugged and taken to a new house. A hardwired unit connects directly and is required above 48 amps. Hardwired is also the better choice outdoors, where an outlet is one more thing for weather to get into. The labor cost is similar.

Permit and inspection

A new 240V circuit needs a permit in California. Some jurisdictions in these counties offer an expedited EV charger permit that turns around in a day or two. We pull it and meet the inspector either way.

Worth knowing: an unpermitted charger install can void the charger warranty and will be flagged at resale, and some utility rebate programmes ask for the permit number before paying out.

Rebates

Utility and state incentives for home charging change from year to year and sometimes mid-year. Southern California Edison has run rebates for both the charger and the wiring. Check what is open when you are ready rather than relying on a figure quoted months ago, and keep the permit and the invoice, since most programmes want both.

Common questions

Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Often, but not always. It depends on your service size and what the house already draws, not on the age of the panel. We run a load calculation first. Where capacity is tight, a load management device or a lower charger amperage frequently avoids the upgrade.

How long does the install take?

Most are done in a day. A detached garage needing a trench is two to three. The permit is usually the longer part of the timeline, not the work.

Can I install it myself?

A 240V circuit is permitted work in California, and doing it without one creates problems at resale, with the charger warranty and with any rebate claim. It is also the kind of circuit where a loose termination becomes a fire rather than a nuisance.

Which charger should I buy?

Buy for amperage and cord length rather than brand. Match the amperage to what your panel supports, and measure the run from the wall to the car port before choosing a cord length. We are happy to advise before you order, and we install whatever you buy.

What if I move?

A plug-in charger on a NEMA 14-50 outlet comes with you. The outlet stays and adds value. A hardwired unit stays with the house.
